Why Do My Domestic Moments Contain Beer?

I am having an oddly domestic moment here. They are rare, so I thought I'd better get this idea down before the moment passes.....

I don't usually do recipe posts, but I thought this one was too good not to share! I have occasionally purchased Beer Bread mixes and you can pay BIG bucks for these. Tastefully Simple (a home party thing) sells them for $6.99.. ouch! Oh but they are SO good.

On my quest to be more frugal (it doesn't come naturally) I discovered this recipe for a Beer Bread mix. It took me less than 5 minutes to prepare the mix from scratch. It came out PERFECT, and tasted exactly like the Tastefully Simple version!

Beer Bread Mix

Mix
3 cups sifted flour
3 teaspoons baking powder
1 teaspoon salt
¼ cup sugar

~~~~~~~~~
1 (12 oz) bottle beer*
¼ c melted butter
Preheat oven to 375
Add beer to mix and stir (do not over stir)
Batter will be lumpy
Spread batter into greased 9X5 loaf pan
Pour melted butter over batter
Bake 50 – 55 min
Cool for 30 minutes
*You can also use soda instead of beer, but it’s not nearly as good, and while my kids were acting drunk after eating it, I informed them that ALL the alcohol cooks out. Miraculously, they went back to normal.
I put some mix in cute Christmas bags with the instructions. It was adorable, much better looking than the purchased version. I think I'll make up a few for Christmas gifts for the neighbors!
Okay, this is getting downright spooky. In a search for yeast-free bread this afternoon, I came across a recipe for beer bread. I emailed my hubby to ask him if I could use his last bottle in the fridge (he still hasn't replied...). Then I checked my Bloglines and here you are with a recipe for beer bread. I think I'll try yours.
Do you think we were separated at birth?
Oops, Terri and Laura, I just rejected your comments, don't tell ask me how.. but I can't fix it, so here they are via copy and paste from my e-mail.
What a great idea! I've been on the lookout for gift ideas like this. Thanks for indulging in your domestic inclinations and posting this.
Sounds yummy! So do you attach the mix to a bottle... Sounds yummy! So do you attach the mix to a bottle of beer when you give it away? I'd love to hear the neighbors reaction to that gift :)
Woah. Impressive. Shall I start calling you Martha (stewart)? *wink*
I know Jet would love this...But he says he's never had it. I'm thinking I'll be buying me some beer.
I assume since it all cooks out that it doesn't taste like beer? I can't stand the stuff. ;)
Laura,
Nope, I don't include the beer. I probably WOULD get a funny reaction to that.
Christin,
I'm not a beer fan either, but I like the subtle tast this has. A bit like a beer cheese soup.
I feel the guilt coming over me--I am hosting a Tastefully Simple party on Friday! Do I dare share your recipe? heee heee
You can use seltzer instead of the beer. It is exactly the same in my opinion.
Funny enough, a friend just emailed me tonight about the Beer Bread saying "sometimes I add italian seasoning, garlic and parm cheese in and it makes a fab garlic bread. One time I put artichoke hearts and sundried tomatoes in. Yu-hum-my"
I love the tastefully simple BB...it's delicious!
I do this same recipe, except you can also buy self-rising flour and then all it takes is 3C flour, 1/4 sugar, and the beverage of choice. My kids like Mountain Dew in it; I'd prefer the beer but never have any and I can't talk Scott into going to the grocery store to buy beer since he sees about 20 church people every time he goes. :)
That sounds easy, but I am bread-making challenged. It never tastes good. That could be a blessing in disguise since I could eat bread all day long! One thing I don't get is sifted flour....why? I guess any self respecting homemaker should have one, so why didn't I get the memo? Thanks for the receipe!
Cindy,
HA! I have the same problem! We live in a small town and buying beer for the beer bread is quite the chore! I bought it once, and I swear, I saw everyone I knew from church. I ended up hiding it under my coat (like that doesn't seem guilty). Don't want those small town rumors circulating about my "new drinking problem" He he.( ; ~K
This so cracks me up. I'm thinking at least a couple (if not all) of our elders and pastors drink alcohol of some sort. NO...not to the point of getting drunk. But just to drink b/c they like the taste.
It's about moderation, people! ;)
The Word says that gluttony is wrong...but I don't see people fasting non-stop. Food isn't bad. Just having no self-control.
anyway...I babble. But it had to be said. You know, of major importance and all. *tease* though I know I'm preaching to the choir... But it just annoys me how small town gossip includes church people as well. *groan* WHY is this?!
I may just copy that idea for gifts of my own. And include a bottle of beer just for talk...
BTW, I LOVE the picture of you and hubby. You're so beautiful!
I may have to try making this bread.
I'm not sure if I have bottled beer or can beer. (we aren't beer drinkers). does it matter which one you use (bottle or can)?
Ok I am in the process of making this and I've got dough not batter! What did I do wrong????
ConservaChick said...
Candi,
Nothing is wrong. It makes a goopy dough! Just plop it in the pan pour on the butter, and bake it! It will be fine!
Family of foxes,
Either works!
I have just devoured 3/4 of a loaf of beer bread in about 10 minutes!! This stuff ROCKS!!!!
Thanks for the help!
I got rid of my bread pans. So, all I had was a flat small casserole pan. So, it was like flat crispy bread. I bet it is better when made in the correct pan.
Thanks for the recipe.
This sounds yummy. I will have to try it. The last time I tried to buy wine, I was looking in the FREEZER for red- then I went and asked if they were all out. Duh. I don't buy alcohol very often, but hubby has beer once and a while, so I should try whipping this up.
